Plan Your Visit
Plan on one to two hours at Halibut Point State Park: The Trustees suggest at least an hour, or two if you also visit the visitor center and museum. The park is open 8:00 am to sunset year-round. In summer, arrive early, because the 70-car lot closes for two hours when it fills, according to The Trustees. Bring sturdy shoes for the granite ledges and water, and leave the swimsuit in the car: swimming isn't allowed here.
Your Visit at a Glance
When to Go
- Summer: searches for the park peak in August. Arrive at the 8 am opening; from Memorial Day to Labor Day a full lot closes for two hours (The Trustees).
- Fall: DCR runs free guided walks, and the visitor center was open Fridays to Sundays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in fall 2026. Parking fees end after October 12.
- Winter and early spring: no parking fee from November through April, and the park stays open. Call ahead about the visitor center.
- Any season: the tide pools are on the granite ledges at the shore.
A Two-Hour Visit
- Park at 4 Gott Avenue and pay the fee if it's in season (parking).
- Walk to the visitor center in the WWII tower.
- Do the 0.7-mile Babson Farm Quarry loop with the self-guided brochure.
- Head down to the ledges and tide pools on The Trustees' side.
- Picnic on the rocks (no fires or grills), then walk back to the lot.
What to Bring
- Water. DCR warns drinking water may not be available on the trails.
- Sturdy shoes, and layers for temperature changes, as DCR's hiking advice suggests.
- Sunscreen. DCR's list includes it.
- Binoculars for birds and, on a clear day, the view toward Maine.
- A downloaded map; paper copies run out (trail map).
- A trash bag. DCR asks you to carry in and carry out.
Facilities
DCR lists picnic areas, restrooms and the visitor center. The Trustees say the visitor center has public restrooms. DCR also lists hiking, fishing, bird watching, picnicking, scenic viewing and educational programs as the park's activities.
With Kids
DCR calls its introductory quarry loop appropriate for most users, including families with children. Keep young children close on the ledges near the water. DCR's public programs are free, and an adult must accompany children. DCR bans swimming in the quarry or entering it for any reason.
With a Dog
Dogs are allowed on a leash of 10 feet or less. Pick up after your dog, and check everyone for ticks afterward, as The Trustees ask. Full rules on rules & regulations.
Costs
DCR lists one fee, parking: $5 for Massachusetts plates and $20 for others during the 2026 fee season, free otherwise. The Trustees say pedestrians and bicyclists pay nothing and Trustees members park free.
Make a Day of It
Rockport's town beaches and Bearskin Neck and Motif No. 1 are a short drive back toward town. Swimming happens there, not here.
